Competition
Held at the Holme Pierrepont whitewater course in Nottingham, the
compeition has a number of categories. The main events are open
the Higher Education Students only (i.e. University Students
- over 18s). The categories include K1, C1, Squirt, and K2/C2.
The K1 categories are split into skill levels - 3 categories in
the Mens' event and 2 categories in the Womens'.
There is also an Open competition for all comers to enter.
This year we had possibly the youngest competitor in the student rodeo - Ross Montandon at 15. He held his own, finishing 8th among some of the best paddlers around!
All entrants must be of 3* standard and comply to HPP Course
Code of Practice
Safety cover is provided by a team organised by Martin. They do an amazing job rescuing people and kit, and without them there would be no event.
Judging is also provided by volunteers from the paddling world.
This year we had Ollie Castle, Dan Heyworth, Jamie Burbeck, Claire O'Hara and
Matt Deaves lending a hand, amongst many others.
Prizes
Are kindly donated by a wide range of paddling companies. There
is also the coveted Student Rodeo cup for the winning university,
which is scored on a Grand Prix style basis, with the top 10 finishers
(top 5 in the smaller events) scoring points for their uni.
New Events
This year we had a couple more events at the weekend.
SquirtBen White (Pyranha) handed out some squirt coaching before he judged the event - which vastly improved the performances this year!
King of the Wave
Unfortunately, the king of the wave event didn't happen this year due to massive numbers in the Mens K1 meaning we had to spend a few hours weeding out the cream of the crop.
