FAQs

Q: “When and Where is it?”

A: The National Student Rodeo is held at the National Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham, from the 4th to the 6th March.

Q: “What is it?”

A: We believe that NSR is the largest freestyle paddling event in the world, the biggest student kayaking event in the UK, and the best paddling party in existence.

Q: “im stil in skool, but i wanna cum, can i still compeet?”

A: Once you have learnt basic grammar and attended a Higher Institute of Education then you too will be eligible to take part in this wonderful event. The NSR is open to Higher Education Students only, that means over the age of 18.

Q: “I’ve not been paddling for very long, can I still come anyway?”

A: Absobloominlutely you can! The NSR is designed to welcome all abilities into the sport of Freestyle. We have varied categories to cater for everyone, and give everyone the chance to win prizes. You must however for safety reasons be of (old) BCU 3* Standard, and comply to Holme Pierrepont Code of Practice. It is up to club captains to make ensure that their entrants are of the adequate ability.

Q: “Is there an open competition?”

A: This will be decided closer to the time, however due to its success last year, the Old Skool event will be running again and be open for old boys and students alike!

Q: “ Will I get sick from the water at HPP?”

A: You will quite possibly leave the weekend feeling rougher than a badgers arse, but this will probably have more to do with the excessive drinking, lack of sleep and dirty burgers from the burger van you’ll be eating than the water. Just keep your mouth shut if you swim!

Q: “How do I register?”

A: Your club captain will post a sign-up sheet in the new year, he/she will then be responsible for entering you onto our online system. If you are the captain and do not know your username and password, then please contact us ... to request an account.

Q: “Our club has never been to the rodeo, how do we get involved?”

A: Chat to your club captain and get them to email us through the contacts page, and we’ll set the ball rolling.

Q: “Why are there only 2 categories for women, when the men get three?”

A: Good question, I thought this was unfair at first too. It sucks, but there just arn’t enough women to warrant three categories. However you will notice this year that Women's Expert is gone, and has been replaced by 'Women'. We really do not want intermediate paddlers to be deterred from getting on the water and plan to award prizes to reflect all abilities.

Q: “That sounds like a lot of money for a weekend, where does my money go?”

A: We can promise you that the Rodeo is not run for a profit. Every penny you give to us gets spent on giving you the best weekend possible. Included in the main ticket cost is two nights camping, one meal, two evenings of entertainment and a bar, one of which being the most mental party you will ever attend! (The bit River Legacy are involved in! See their website on the link bottom right) You also get entry into one event. We think compared to alot of other events that it is absolute value for money.
