K1 Event

The K1 event involves kayakers of all abilities, from the novices who will get points for “crowd pleasers” such as standing up in their boat, paddle spins, fancy dress and throwing things at the judges, to the experts who get to show off their moves to a crowd of adoring fans.

The event will start on the Saturday morning with the “Extreme Slalom”. This involves paddling down the lower part of the course, performing specific tricks at different places. There will be a demonstration run of the extreme slalom at 8am on Saturday morning, to show you all what we are expecting, please try to be up and by the course by then! There will be no points awarded for fancy dress in the extreme slalom - save that for the heats!

Although safety cover will be provided for the extreme slalom, safety boaters are encouraged to accompany the less experienced kayakers down the course. The start times of all contestants will be posted up on here after registration has closed.

After the extreme slalom, you will be put into an ability category for the K1 heats. The categories will be Novice Men, Intermediate Men, Expert Men, Novice Women and Advanced Women. All information about the timings and locations of the heats will be announced on the weekend. The finals for each category will be held on the Sunday, with fantastic prizes going to the top 3 in each final (top 5 for the novices).

The heats and finals for each category will be run as rodeo style jam sessions. Due to safety reasons, this year there will be no points awarded for any tricks which start out of a boat.

With over 750 contestants, the most popular event of NSR is growing every year. This year there will be a limit placed on numbers, so register early to avoid disappointment!

C1 and squirt

More information will be given on these events closer to the time if there is deemed to be enough interest.

Duo

Each University will be able to enter up to 2 duos. The duo events will start with a race down the course with a 360° turn, and certain slalom gates to get through. The winner of each race will go through to a jam style final held on the Looping Pool on Sunday afternoon. This is arguably the most exciting event in the competition and gets a huge crowd!

Old Skool

The Old Skool is our open competition, for students and graduates alike. Dig out the most retro kit and kayak you can find and get ready to throw some old and new school moves to impress our judges.

Scoring

Details on scoring will be made available closer to the event.
